The Liberal Democrats have made significant progress in tackling climate change over the last five years. Much has been accomplished here in our region. Now the Conservatives are set to undo much of the good work.
Our twin approach to reducing the production of carbon dioxide is
- to reduce overall energy consumption and
- to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy.
In order to save money the Conservative government wants to stop our Green Deal home insulation and improvement plan and to cut spending on nuclear decommissioning. There has been a five-fold growth in Green Deal applications over the last twelve months, already making an impact on energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. Now, this is all at risk.
The Conservatives are also taking an axe to the green economy that we have been developing over the last five years, putting jobs and investment in wind power at risk. This is particularly bad for our region where the green economy has been growing very healthily until now.
Liberal Democrat Energy and Climate Change spokesperson Lord Purvis said: “Anti-wind power Tories will put up electricity bills, cut green jobs and reduce investment. This is bad for the environment, it is bad for the economy and it is bad for our energy supplies. This is the sort of short sighted mistake that the Liberal Democrats consistently stopped the Tories from making."
